We drove the old Ford to William’s Guns and Ammo, which appeared locked.

"Looks like I'll have to smash the window."

"Wait, Harry. Wait." I turned to see Dorothy pointing up Main street. "Isn’t that the sheriff?"

The sheriff's car had a large gold decal on the sides rather than the standard white for the deputies vehicles.

"It looks like it." he didn't leave town after all so that left one other possibility.

The sheriff saw us and honked his horn—an action I wouldn't expect from a parasite possessed individual, but I wasn't about to take chances.

"Get behind me, Dorothy."

"But it's the sheriff," she protested.

I reached under my jacket for my Colt .45, I didn't draw it but rested my hand on it.

The sheriff pulled up behind to the old Ford and jumped out like his pants were on fire. "You lied to me, boy!"

I instantly took note of the frustration and anger in his voice, not the tone I'd expect if he were possessed by the parasite.

"Not sure what you mean, sheriff?" I kept my hand on my gun as he approached.

"There ain't no radiation poisoning, it’s them things from outa space ain’t it? They’re some kinda leeches or vampires, they feed off you, right?"

That came close to convincing me the sheriff remained human, but could the parasite be capable of pulling a fast one?

"What happened sheriff?" Dorothy stepped between us, eager to know.

"I went out to tell the Johnson's, who have the ranch at the end of town. It's not too far, so I thought why not? When I left the city limits, I see these two MPs from the base standing like a pair of statue’s by a jeep in the middle of the damned highway, staring straight at me like they was in a trance. I stopped and got out to see what the problem was and their eyes went all black like paint was poured over their eyeballs from the inside of their skulls."

The sheriff then tipped his cap back and moved closer and eyeballed me. "But you knew that, didn't ya' boy?"

I relaxed the grip on my pistol, the flared nostrils and the angered stare, told me the sheriff was no host. "Yes, I did sheriff, but I didn't think I could tell you that. Would you have believed me?"

"Space creatures that take over your body like a leech? Hell, no. Hard enough believing a flying saucer crashed but this…" he waved his arms in a dismissive manner.

"I had to find a way for you to order an evacuation of the town and radiation poisoning the only answer," I explained before turning my attention back to the two MPs that confronted him. "What happened with the two MPs?"

"When their eyes turned black, I knew they wasn’t normal people, I jumped back in my car and took off. Them sonsabitches stood right in front of me, so I ran right through them."

"I'm glad you got away sheriff." Dorothy reached and grabbed his forearm and squeezed.

The sheriff’s anger subsided and he smiled at Dorothy—who did have the magic touch.
